Learn Shamanic Journeying

A Beginner's Guide to Shamanism

What is Shamanism?

Shamanism is one of the world's oldest spiritual practices, with traditions that span thousands of years across many cultures. While each culture has its own teachings and ceremonies, they share a common understanding that all life is interconnected. Every person, animal, plant, stone, and element of nature is a living part of the web of life.

Over time, many of us have lost touch with our relationship with nature, our inner wisdom, and the cycles and rhythms of life. Shamanism offers a path back to that connection. Rather than asking us to adopt a new belief system, it invites us to remember our relationship with ourselves, the natural world, and Spirit through direct experience.

Walking a shamanic path is rooted in respect, gratitude, community, and living in harmony with both the seen and unseen worlds.

Do I need experience to take this course?

No. As children, many of us experienced the world as alive, filled with wonder, mystery, and possibility. Through play, imagination, and daydreaming, we naturally entered states of curiosity and openness.

Shamanic journeying invites us to remember that way of seeing and to awaken that same natural ability with intention. Using the steady rhythm of the drum, we quiet the thinking mind and enter non-ordinary reality. From there, we receive guidance, healing, and insight through direct experience.

Is Shamanism a religion?

No, it is a spiritual practice that awakens a soul memory of our relationship with all of life.  Everyone walks this path in their own way, and shamanic practices can complement many different spiritual beliefs and traditions.

What is Shamanic Journeying?

Shamanic journeying is a practice that allows us to enter an altered state of consciousness through the steady rhythm of the drum.

In this altered state, we shift our awareness beyond ordinary thinking, moving from what shamanism calls "ordinary reality" into "non-ordinary reality," where we enter the spiritual realms.

From this place, we connect with helping spirits, receive guidance, access insight, and experience healing.  Many students experience this as a sense of being supported within a deep place of remembering.

What is a Power Animal?

One of the first relationships you will form in this practice is with a power animal, a helping spirit who works with you as a guide, protector, and ally.

We can connect and work with many power animals throughout our lifetimes.  The one you will meet in class will be your journey power animal.

As you build your relationship with this helping spirit, you begin to:
• Receive clear guidance
• Strengthen your intuition
• Navigate life with greater trust
• Feel more connected and supported

Where will my power animal and I journey?

There are three Shamanic Worlds.

The Lower World is an Earth-centered realm filled with plant, animal, and nature spirits, the elements, elders, and teachers who share the medicine and teachings of our natural world.

The Middle World is our everyday world experienced from an altered state of consciousness. It is used to perceive the energetics of places, locate lost objects, and participate in Medicine for the Earth work.

The Upper World is an ethereal place filled with universal guides and teachers who help us learn from and experience what lies beyond this world.

How do I journey?

During the workshop, you will learn how to create a sacred circle, utilize the power of intention, and follow the beat of the drum to journey into the shamanic world with your power animal.  You will also receive a handout with simple instructions for continuing your journeys at home, along with journey suggestions to help you continue building your relationship with your helping spirits.
